Stop A/B Testing Until You've Fixed These 7 Things First

A/B testing is one of the most powerful tools in conversion optimization — and one of the most commonly wasted. Teams run test after test on button colors and headline variants while their page is hemorrhaging visitors for reasons that have nothing to do with which shade of green they picked. If your conversion rate is sitting below 2–3% and you haven't done the foundational work yet, you're not optimizing. You're rearranging deck chairs.
Your Page Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load
Google's own data shows that as page load time goes from 1 second to 3 seconds, the probability of a mobile visitor bouncing increases by 32%. Push that to 5 seconds and you've lost more than half your audience before they've read a single word. No A/B test on Earth can compensate for that.
Run your page through Google PageSpeed Insights right now. Look at your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) score — it should be under 2.5 seconds. The usual culprits are uncompressed images, too many third-party scripts, and web fonts loading without a fallback. Fix your images first: convert JPEGs and PNGs to WebP, compress everything above 100KB, and add lazy loading to anything below the fold. That alone often cuts load time by 30–40%. You Don't Know Why Visitors Are Actually Leaving

Your Value Proposition Takes More Than 5 Seconds to Understand
Hand your landing page to someone who has never heard of your product. Give them 5 seconds to look at it, then close the tab and ask them: what does this company do, and why should I care? If they can't answer both questions clearly, your value proposition isn't working — and everything you test on top of it will underperform because the foundation is shaky.
The most common failure here is leading with features instead of outcomes. "AI-powered workflow automation" means nothing to a visitor who just arrived. "Cut your weekly reporting time in half" means something immediately. Your headline should name who it's for, what they get, and why it's different — ideally in under 10 words. Your subheadline can carry one more layer of specificity. Don't get clever. Clarity converts. Once you have a value proposition that passes the 5-second test, you've earned the right to start testing variations of it.

Every field you add to a form is a reason to leave. Expedia famously removed a single optional "Company Name" field from their booking form and made an additional $12 million in profit in a year. That's not a made-up CRO myth — it's a documented case. The field wasn't hurting anyone, except it was.
Audit every field on your form and ask: do we actually use this data, or do we just think we might want it someday? Phone number is almost always optional for the visitor but gets treated as required by the marketing team. Job title is usually for segmentation that could happen post-signup instead. A standard B2B lead form should have 3–4 fields maximum at the top of the funnel. If you need more data for qualification, collect it progressively — after the first conversion, not before. Trim your form to the minimum viable fields first, then test variations from that baseline.
Your Mobile Experience Is an Afterthought
More than 60% of web traffic now comes from mobile, but most landing pages are still built desktop-first and then "made responsive" as an afterthought. Responsive doesn't mean optimized. A CTA button that requires a precise tap, a headline that wraps awkwardly across three lines, or a hero image that pushes the value proposition below the fold on a phone — these aren't minor annoyances, they're conversion killers.
Pull up your page on an actual phone, not just a browser simulator. Can you tap the CTA with your thumb without zooming in? Does the most important message appear above the fold before any scrolling? Are your form fields large enough to type in comfortably? Fix the things that require physical effort or cause frustration first. If you're running paid traffic to a mobile-heavy audience and your mobile conversion rate is half your desktop rate, that gap is your biggest lever — not whatever headline variant you were planning to test.
You Have No Social Proof, or the Wrong Kind
Visitors who don't know you need a reason to trust you before they'll hand over their email, their credit card, or their time. Social proof provides that reason — but only when it's specific and credible. "Great product! Highly recommend." is not social proof. It's filler that sophisticated buyers actively distrust.
Effective social proof names the person, their role, their company, and ideally the specific outcome they got. "We cut customer onboarding time by 3 days in the first month" from a Head of Operations at a recognizable company does real work. So does a logo bar of companies your visitors would recognize and aspire to be like. Aggregate stats help too — "Used by 12,000 marketing teams" — as long as the number is real and meaningful. If you don't have strong testimonials yet, reach out to your five happiest customers and ask them one specific question: what result did you get that you wouldn't have without us? That answer, lightly edited, is your testimonial. Get that in place before you start testing headline copy.
Your Traffic Sources Don't Match Your Page
This one gets ignored constantly. You can have a perfectly optimized landing page that still converts poorly because the people arriving on it have completely different intent than the page assumes. A visitor who clicked a Facebook ad that said "Free template for agency owners" expects to see a free template for agency owners — not a generic SaaS homepage with a 14-day trial offer.
Message match is the alignment between what your ad or email promised and what your page delivers. When it breaks down, visitors feel tricked or confused, and they leave. Before you run any test, check your top traffic sources and read the exact copy of the ads, emails, or organic pages that send visitors to your landing page. Then check whether your headline directly echoes that promise. If it doesn't, fix the message match first. You'll often see a 20–30% lift from that alone, with no test required. Once your baseline is solid, your test results will be cleaner and faster to reach significance.
